WHO Finding Adds to Debate Over Mobile Phones, Brain Cancer

The World Health Organization has added to the debate over the risk of brain cancer from mobile phone use. The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer recently listed the signals from wireless devices as “possibly carcinogenic.” This finding puts cell phones in the same risk group as the pesticide DDT — but also in the same group as coffee. A group of thirty-one scientists from fourteen countries made the finding. The announcement came at the end of a meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Lyon, France. The concern is that extended contact with radiofrequency electromagnetic fields may increase a user’s risk for glioma. Glioma is the most common form of brain cancer.The scientists spent a week examining existing research. Dr. Jonathan Samet from the University of Southern California led the group. He says the finding that there could be some risk means scientists need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer. The statement noted that the number of mobile phone users is large and growing, especially among young adults and children. Mobile phone subscriptions are estimated at five billion worldwide. The scientists called for more research into long-term, heavy use of mobile phones. They also suggested taking measures to reduce exposure to the signals, like hands?free devices or texting.Camilla Rees from an American group called Electromagnetic Health praised the report but says wider research is needed. She says: “We’ve only had this technology around for about fifteen years, and most carcinogens will take … thirty to forty years to develop a cancer.” She says some scientists believe there could be a “tsunami of brain cancer unless we do something to educate people to lower their exposure to this kind of risk.” CTIA, the International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry, dismissed the report. The group pointed out that no new research had been done. And it noted that the cancer research agency has given the same finding to things like coffee and pickled vegetables. SingTel discloses typical mobile broadband speeds

SINGAPORE: Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has become the first telco in Asia to unveil the average access speeds of its mobile broadband services.

This covers only its wireless data plans, and not voice and data plans which many smartphone users subscribe to.

Hence when you plug a dongle into a notebook computer to surf the Internet, you can now know the average speed you will get if you’re a SingTel customer.

For example, for users of a 3.6 megabit per second (Mbps) plan, the typical range is between 0.8Mbps and 2.1Mbps or at most 60 percent.

The maximum average for those using the 7.2Mbps service is at most half (between 1.4Mbps and 3.7Mbps).

Premium customers on SingTel’s 21Mbps service will have access speeds of between 1.7Mbps and 4.8Mbps.

The telco has disclosed the speed range achievable, as it tries to be more transparent and attract customers.

SingTel’s executive vice-president of Digital Consumer, Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, said: “Consumers are actually quite confused with the type of speed that they’re getting on their mobile network, their mobile data network in particular. So by providing these typical speeds, we can explain to them….80% of the time they will be getting this range of speed we have published.”

“We are working very closely with IDA (Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore) to look at how we can measure typical speeds for fixed broadband. For now, the mobile broadband is a lot easier to measure,” he added.

The move towards more transparency comes amid a proposal by IDA to make it compulsory for Internet service providers to publish “typical speeds” on both fixed and mobile broadband. This could be enforced as early as next year.

Analysts said the move by SingTel is one in the right direction and may spur others to follow suit.

Ms Sherlin Pang, research manager at IDC, said: “Because there are also other competitors around, with this information, we are actually getting more transparency in their broadband speed. So in future there would be a possibility that other service providers will put out such additional information to their consumers.”

The other telcos StarHub and M1 said they are also considering similar plans to improve their offerings.

But there are thoughts that more can be done in this area.

For example, the telco could have more specific and separate targets, such as what is the expected speed during off-peak and peak hours.

There are also no compensation clauses yet if such targets are not met.

On Monday, SingTel also announced the launch of a new priority service to allow its mobile broadband customers on higher-end plans to have a faster, more reliable connection.

Those on the 7.2Mbps or the 21Mbps plans will have their traffic prioritised under a free system called “Priority Pass”.
