Can smartphones that were released during 3g times be upgraded to 4g? (With a software update of course)

I just got a droid 2 and I was hoping it might get 4g support

No. 3g phones will not be able to use 4g service.

what software is needed to use my phones 3g to give my laptop an internet connection directly
(i dont mean making my phone a mobile wifi hotstop, i can alrdy do that)
i want my phone connecting to my laptop device and only that device

I haven’t heard of any way to do that. I would use the mobile hotspot and put a secure WPA2 password on it.

I’m just trying to figure out if it’s worth it to upgrade to a 3G phone, whatever that is! My cell phone is a couple of years old and I don’t know what the big deal is with these new smart phones.

The most important improvement in 3G, compared to the older 2G and 2.5G standards is much higher capacity of the Internet access. It provides some extra functionality, like for example video calls, quite fast (compared to 2G – very fast) surfing through the Internet, streaming video in good quality etc. So if you’re a fan of using the Internet wherever you are by your mobile phone, then it’s worth to upgrade.

In theory, smart phones differ from simply mobiles in operating system. "Traditional" phones don’t really have any operating system. They have their own firmware, and the interface is based mainly on Java platform. Therefore, they don’t need very efficient components (like fast processor, big amount of RAM and ROM memory). Smart phones are more complicated in this terms. They are like micro computers, and they have their REAL operating system, namely: Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android, Apple iOS, Bada OS. So they have to be better equipped. Only disadvantage of smartphones is larger demand for electrical energy. So you have to charge the battery more often.

Practically, simply cells can run only small applications (called applets), so they don’t allow to use GPS navigation system. Well, some has this functionality, but it usually needs permanent access to the Internet… Or if you really want to, there is some Java software (like TrekBuddy), but it’s usually reduced and doesn’t work properly. On smartphone you can install almost everything you need to. There is many applications available, which you use on your personal computer – they are also developed for smart phones! For example Opera web browser, Skype, MSN Messenger, DivX/Xvid players etc

But if you don’t really need these features, better choose simply mobile phone. Actually they have a lot of additional functions like playing mp3 music or mp4 videos, recording quite good quality videos, touch screen, fast Internet access using 3G technology, smart widgets etc.

I have the INQ Chat 3G and when I type in a number, go to options, there is video call. I was wondering what type of phones can I video call with. Can I only video call with other INQ Chats?

Any phone that supports video calls. I thought there wasn’t a video call in the INQ chat 3G. What’s your cellphone provider?

1) LTE is not actually 4G. LTE is 3.9G. LTE2 will be 4G

2) You will need to buy new phones to use LTE. It’s known that Motorola and HTC will have LTE phones for Verizon ready for February 2011 launch. They promised at least 6 devices, but no details.

I am looking for a phone that I can use while traveling to connect to the internet (ex WiFi networks) for free from cafes, etc. Do phones with 3G connect to WiFi networks for free?
Or do you sign up for the 3G plan, and then can get internet access?

All wifi enabled phones are smart phones and most, if not all, carriers require a 3g (or 4g) data plan with such phones. Once you have the plan, wifi is free in free wifi hot spots and on secure wifi networks to which you have the passcode.

it seems like verizon is just veering off to only releasing new android phones or just basic feature phones. i’m eligible for a cell phone upgrade, but i’m waiting for something decent to come thats not a smartphone..

btw, i checked out the samsung reality but the sales rep said it was a problem phone.

Hi there. I work for Verizon. The main reason is Verizon has been trying to compete with iphones. ATT has had the contract for years and so Verizon has made a push to match iphones size and ability,therefore you will see more and more phones withoutkeyboards. Wth regards to waht the sales rep said,…every phone has querks, then a new software comes out to fix those querks but ultiamtely ithey aren’t found out until about 1 to 5 months after each release. Verizon however is good about updating most software.
